NZIPP 2013 Iris Awards success

We’re big believers in the NZIPP – the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography.

Not only is Jason a fully Qualified and Accredited member, but he’s also the Chairman of the Wellington region. We believe in the aims of the NZIPP: providing a benchmark to our clients; promoting friendship and a network of photographers; and most importantly, raising our standard of photography.

This is where the annual NZIPP Iris print awards come in. Our clients are awesome enough to let us try a few things and create some amazing artwork for them, and every year we select our favourite ~8 images for selection into the Iris Awards.

It’s nerve-wracking and exhilarating at the same time.

This year was no different, and Jason had his best result ever, walking away as a Finalist in the Wedding Creative category, and receiving 4 Bronzes, 1 Silver and 2 GOLDS!

Not only were there 2 Golds, but one of the images – from our other business, Studio Hospcotch – was the highest scoring colour print of the entire awards.

It’s something to have your clients love and respect your work, but another thing altogether to have your photography peers – the best in the country – rate your work so highly.

Enough words, onto the images. Enjoy!

Lizzy & Luke

Lizzy & Luke, celebrating with their closest family & friends.

And some chickens, geese, sheep, some goats and a peacock or two. And a laughing donkey.

The Staglands Wildlife Reserve is officially the most fun you could possibly have for a wedding. The most fun. Ever.

The Wellesley Country Park down the road from Staglands also provided a stunning reception venue, to compliment the rustic outdoors charm of this spring wedding. Lizzy & Luke, this was awesome!

Katrina & Ant

And finally, rounding out our summer season: the rocking vintage wedding of Katrina & Ant, held at the always awesome Erskine Wedding & Events, Island Bay.

A first viewing and photoshoot before the ceremony; beers and canapes outside on the lawn; Shaun Preston pounding away on the piano as late night entertainment – this was as relaxed and non-traditional as you could get. And, this is the first, and possibly only, time I get to accompany a wedding blog with Guns ‘n Roses. That’s how cool these guys are!

(This wedding was also recently featured over at Polka Dot Bride – don’t forget to head over there for your very own wedding inspiration.)

Katrina & Ant – thank you!

NZIPP Iris Awards – success!

As a big advocate of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography, and of course a recently qualified member, it was important to my personal growth and development that I entered a few prints in the recent Iris Awards.

Well, imagine my excitement when I sat through 6+ hours of print judging during the awards to see my prints receive awards. And not just any awards, but a Silver and a couple of Bronzes.

Of course, it didn’t really sink in until hours later after been congratulated by plenty of other photographers. Apparently Silver is quite a big deal. Who knew? :)

The full gallery of winning images can be found here, with the Wedding category (where all 4 of my images were entered) here.

What was really important to me when selecting and processing images for the awards was that the image were true to me. Past winners of these awards have often been criticised for being overly photoshopped, and whilst I’m sure some tone mapping and heavy use of textures could have added some emphasis and drama to my images, I wanted to enter these awards with my photos being processed the same way that me – and our clients – like seeing them. Other than some sepia toning (which, I’ll be honest, isn’t entirely normal for us) these are almost as I delivered them.

The following were the medal winners. 3 out of 4 prints isn’t a bad ratio – next year, I’m going for the album category. Aiming high. :)

Silver (Kahiwa & Grant):

NZIPP Iris Awards Silver medal

Bronze (Matt & Kel):

NZIPP Iris Awards Bronze medal

Bronze (Leigh & Giles):

NZIPP Iris Awards Bronze medal

A big thank you must go out to Jenny & Larissa at FineLine Photography for their assistance in helping me choose suitable images, advice on processing & cropping my images, and finally working with me for the final printing & matting. I couldn’t have entered – let alone won these awards – without their help. Thank you!

Kahiwa & Grant

I started by taking off my shoes. Of course, that’s the polite thing to do in anyone’s house – right?

Our conversation deviated from wedding photography through to website design, SEO and social media… What? Not all photographers discuss SEO techniques with their prospective clients?

I brought up the fact that Aneta and myself were married at Erskine – it only seemed fitting to mention it.

I was sitting in Kahiwa’s apartment discussing the prospect of photographing her upcoming wedding to Grant. All of the above seemed fairly respectable and on-topic at the time – the conversation just wandered as we got to know each other a little bit more. Little did I know that a few weeks later we would receive an email from Kahiwa confirming her choice of photographers and the following posting appeared on her blog:

But here was someone I felt comfortable talking to, almost straight away. I *love* that it’s a husband and wife team, and that they got married at Erskine too. I like that they’re trying for something a little bit different. I like that he took his shoes off when he came inside. I like that I found them through a friend (Jake). I like that I got to talk to him about their website and marketing strategies (I’m such a nerd).”

Well, what do you know? :)

It was just meant to be. And I’m glad I’m polite enough to take off my shoes, that I too am an internet nerd and that we love Erskine so much, because I got the chance to photograph the beautiful occasion that was Kahiwa & Grant’s wedding. It. Was. Awesome.

Boys & Girls – I present to you: Team Grahiwa.

Kahiwa & Grant – thank you.

Big news: I’m NZIPP ‘Q’ qualified

Every day is a pretty awesome day in the WE DO household, but last month was something a little bit more special than most. You see, I (Jason) received notification that I passed my NZIPP ‘Q’ assessment and am now classified as a fully professional member of the NZIPP.

So, what does it mean?

It means I’ve been identified as attaining a credible quality standard. It means I have a  “commitment to running their businesses in a professional way, with skill and knowledge” – but you already knew that, right? :)

It means I’ll appear in a pretty select group of photographers in the NZIPP directory, alongside some of my most admired peers in the industry.

And it means I get to flaunt the NZIPP logo around a little bit too!

A few images from the successful album are below, courtesy of Matt & Kel’s amazing wedding day. If you want to see the winning album –  or any of our other work – in person, please get in touch! We’d love the opportunity to present our albums and slideshows to you.

You may recognise Leigh & Giles from earlier, here.

You may also recognise Leigh from here.

Or maybe you saw Leigh & Giles’ feature over at Wedding Chicks today here.

Either way, you’ll want to stick around to see a little more – these say more than our words ever could.

Ladies & Gentlemen, the beautiful Leigh & Giles at Tarureka Estate, Featherston. Enjoy!

Katrina & Blair

Remember Katrina & Blair? That was a quick preview from their engagement session – now buckle yourselves in and prepare for the full force of their wedding!

We work with a lot of couples – clearly that’s what weddings are all about, right? However, I don’t think we’ve come across a couple that seem so perfectly suited to each other than Katrina & Blair. And they worked in such close harmony in the build up to preparing their big day together.

All the details were perfect, and everything was planned down to perfection. They each brought so many aspects of their own style, and more importantly, their own personality to their wedding day. It was a fantastic gathering of some really close family and friends, and you can experience the day in full detail below. Enjoy!

We began in Kilbirnie for a little hairdressing for Katrina and her bridesmaids.

Crystal Clear Productions were also present on the big day, and it’s amazing how few of my photos they appear in. They did an extremely good job of covering the wedding in a non-obtrusive manner, much like our approach. Well, apart from the odd interview, like below, of course!

Meanwhile Blair, his groomsmen and father put the finishing touches on the Audi wedding cars.

One of my new favourite Wellington venues – The Lodge @ Shelly Bay – looked magnificent. Not only is the isolated setting on the Shelly Bay coast a brilliant spot for the late evening sunshine, but the interior of the venue is elegantly renovated and beautiful. Add Blair’s lighting handiwork to the exterior of the venue and the place is truly stunning.

Wellington Wedding Expo wrap-up

Last weekend Aneta and myself decided to exhibit at the recent Wellington Wedding Expo. We wanted to create something a little different from the usual trestle-table affair, so set about building a lounge-themed set to encourage people to enter our stand, get up close with our prints and slideshows and sit down and chill looking over our albums.

We found these awesome chairs. But red isn’t really our colour, so we set about reupholstering them ourselves:

IMG_0193 IMG_0202

Sweet!

We also built & stained this wicked fireplace surround and reupholstered this beautiful fireplace screen:

IMG_0213

We found some other great furniture – a coffee table, a beautiful lamp, and a bunch of assorted antique frames.

We also had a few new albums printed – it feels great to refresh our samples from time to time – and framed a bunch of our favourite photos.

And then on the Saturday, it all came together for the first time as we spent the day setting up the stand. First up was the wallpaper:

DSC_2923

Followed by the hanging of our numerous frames and placement of Aneta’s bespoke stationery designs:

DSC_2932  DSC_2942

Finally, it was all in place:

DSC_2963  DSC_2967

DSC_2947

Sunday was awesome! We didn’t manage to get as personal as we would have liked with many visitors, but we had some great discussions with passionate couples and even ran into quite a number of our existing clients looking for other inspiration for their big day next summer. It was great fun!

IMG_0221 IMG_0222

If you stopped by and had a chat to us, thanks. We appreciate it. Hope to see you at a wedding next summer.

If you didn’t get a chance to chat to us, but are curious about our work, get in touch and we’ll present our slideshows and albums to you in person!

Take care out there.

Mel & Matt

How did Matt get a hottie like that to a party like this?

Gear Homestead. Actually the scene of the infamous alien battle from Peter Jackson’s Bad Taste, although this day was nothing like that movie. :)

Replace gore and blood splatter with sunshine and warmth, replace guns with bottles of bubbly and replace aliens from space with a bride and groom clearly in love, and you have the recipe for a fantastic wedding!

The always awesome Rowan from Invision Photography was a second shooter for me on this particular wedding, and he rocked it. Thanks buddy.

Mel & Matt – thank you for allowing Rowan and myself to be a part of your special day.

You’re a legend Matt.

“An Ode to the Ever Clever Jason and Aneta”

We’re at the same time chuffed, a little embarrassed and overly delighted to receive this recent review by the beautiful Hannah.

It’s been posted over on our WeddingWise profile. Isn’t this the cutest limerick ever written? :)

WE DO… We Did and You Should

~ An Ode to the Ever Clever Jason and Aneta

We once met a nice guy called Jace,
Whose skinny black tie is quite ace,
As as for Aneta
WE DO hope you’ve met her,
They’ll both put a smile on your face

We said “Guys we are quite a big fan,
We need help and WE DO think you can,
Take a photo quite arty,
And join in the party,
Will you help? We’ve a wedding to plan!”

Willingly as a bride I confess,
We do know about pre-wedding stress,
But Bridezilla or not
They will capture that shot,
WE DO mark them “A plus” and no less!

And then, WE DO highlight the truth,
Their black box will then capture your youth
It’s four poses of fun,
WE DO love this one,
It’s their magical, cool photo booth!

WE DO love the result – can’t pretend,
You must tell each and every friend
There’s no doubt they’re the best
And their blog tells the rest
In summary: WE DO recommend!!

Hannah & James

We do love your photography!” said the email from Hannah, confirming our presence at their wedding.

You may notice something missing from this wedding. The timeless, emotive, classic black&white shots that normally punctuate any wedding coverage are missing. It’s all colour.

But the day was so full of fun, so full of laughter, and so full of beautiful light, that it seems wrong to show these in anything but.

Ladies & Gentlemen, Boys & Girls, I present to you – in full technicolour – Hannah & James!

We started at Is Bliss on Taranaki St in Wellington, where Hannah and her 5 bridesmaids – yes, 5, all sisters and cousins! – spent the morning enjoying being pampered. This is always a really important part to our day: we get to meet the bridesmaids and the bride’s family and spend some relaxed time with them.

But you know what struck me most about this wedding? Hannah’s smiles. There’s barely a moment during the entire day when she wasn’t beaming with happiness. Go ahead, have a look again, count them. And that’s not all of the photos, oh no. Hannah mentioned to us after the wedding how much she enjoyed the day – how she was able to sit back, take it all in and enjoy it. And that’s what we love to see most of all. Happiness. It’s here in abundance.

Natalie & Brett

“Does Jeff dress like a girl at home?” – It’s looking likely.

“Will my ass get fatter with this full-cream milk?” – Signs point to No.

I was playing with the Magic 8 ball we found lying on the counter whilst we waited for our morning coffees.

“Will you be our wedding photographer?”

I shook the ball. Reply hazy, try again it said.

“No, I’m being serious – will you be our wedding photographer?”

I looked at Natalie. She’s not serious very often, but she certainly was now.

Fast forward 12+months and I’m sitting in her sister’s kitchen on a wet January morning whilst Jaime Leigh is doing her thing with Nat’s makeup and Right Said Fred is playing on the stereo.

When starting this blog I vowed to never talk about the Wellington weather. It’s Wellington. Weather changes, that’s what it does. But this was a January day like no other: gloomy; unrepentant rain, sideways at times; surprisingly cold.

Yet, Nat – in the way only she can – was positive and upbeat right through the day. She also had her fantastic sisters to help with that.

… I shake my little tush on the catwalk“. Yep, today was going to be alright.

Of course, why should a little bit of rain stop a bridal party intent on having a little fun. And a big thanks to the Go Wellington bus drivers who patiently waited while we took a few frames!

Seeking further refuge, the staff at the Wellington Railway Station were amazingly accommodating. Give them a heads up, let them know what you’re doing, allow them to take a few snaps for their newsletter, and they were only happy to let a 7-strong bridal party let lose in the station. :)

An ode to Christchurch

With hue like that when some great painter dips his pencil in the gloom of earthquake and eclipse.

Christchurch. Feb 22. 12.51pm. On what is shaping up to be undoubtedly New Zealand’s darkest day ever, the earth roared.

Our current Christchurch clients, Melissa & Martin, survived the quake, but the household due to host their wedding reception didn’t fare quite so well. We supported their decision to postpone, and will support any decisions they make regarding their wedding going forward. Our thoughts are with all of you, whether you were directly affected or simply suffering alongside the rest of New Zealand, and our heart goes out to you.

Stay strong Christchurch.

At a time like this it seems inappropriate to blog the emotions and joyousness of a wedding, therefore we present to you: our ode to Christchurch.

Inspiration – Back To The Future

This has nothing to do with weddings. Nothing at all.

But who doesn’t love a little photographic creativity? And this is one of the best we’ve seen.

Irina Werning entered people’s houses and poked through their old photographs. Fascinated by their retro look, but also beginning to imagine how people would feel and look if they were to reenact them today… she actually did it. She took them back to their future.

The attention to detail, the attention to lighting, the post-processing. Just amazing. Here’s a sample (be sure to click through for more):

Matt & Kel

“He’s a loose cannon, you can’t tie him down”, Matt’s father was saying to me late at night during the reception.

“I know”, I was thinking to myself, “I’ve just spent a hour trying to take a single serious picture of Matt & Kel together. She’s going to hate me for not getting capturing him without a goofy smile or in the middle of some goofy pose”.

But in the end, it didn’t matter.

Because you know what? That’s Matt. And that’s the Matt that Kel fell in love with.

I may not have taken a serious photo. But god we had fun.

Meredith & James

Meredith & James. The Perfect Match.

I met Meredith at the North City Wedding Expo in January.

“Are you from Taupo?” she asked me.

“No” I replied bluntly.

Looking at her confused and disappointed face, I then thought for a couple of seconds over what she had just asked me. Realising she had actually asked “Would you travel to Taupo?” I tactfully reconsidered my response:

“Actually, hang on. I think we could work something out.”

And we did.

And it rocked.

Try listening to this piece of music whilst scrolling through the images.

At the same time James and his fellow dudes were getting ready down the road. Their family batch – beautifully positioned on the Taupo lakefront – was perfectly suited for a morning of suiting up and some quiet bubbles to calm the nerves. In a custom-tailored suit, square-tipped tie and stunning brogues James certainly looked the part.

And off course, the Photobooth – with accompanying guestbook – was present. What wedding would be complete without the Photobooth?

And then it stopped. The band ceased. The crowd gathered. And in the most amazing individual dance performance ever witnessed, James proceeded to demonstrate all those moves that wooed Meredith during that fateful evening at Boogie Wonderland. Usher’s O.M.G. will never sound the same again.

Hilton, Taupo

Oh My God indeed.

Congratulations Nella!

We always love keeping in touch with our upcoming brides & grooms. It’s nice to share in the excitement, passing back tips and ideas, and watch them make their way towards their big day.

We were just as chuffed as Nella when she was recently the winner of the Astra Bridal Win your Wedding Dress competition. Congratulations Nella!

As a teaser, this is the beautiful Nella and dashing Talia from a recent engagement shoot.

Capturing the moment – alternative angles

Interesting and unexpected things will always happen during your wedding day. We do our best to ensure we’re constantly paying attention, camera ready to capture those moments, but a camera can only point in one direction at a time!

That’s why, when WE DO Photography & Design capture your wedding, you’ll get 2 photographers. This not only gives us great coverage and creative freedom, but it enables us to capture an alternative point of view – like this great montage of the wild Wellington wind whipping the hat off the groom’s mother during the middle of the formal photo!

Capturing the moment – #2

It’s about being ready. When the unexpected happens – as it always does – it’s about being prepared, camera in hand, to capture that moment.
Continuing our theme of ‘capturing the moment’, today’s image features the curious brother of the flower girl, peeping around the corner to uncover what that strange man with the camera is doing.
He turned an otherwise average photo of a dress hanging on a door into something interesting, curious, cheeky. A great moment.

Capturing the moment

Photography is about a lot of things. The coming together of the right scene, the right lighting and the right moment. As we press the shutter we imprint a visualisation of the scene, captured everlasting for others to share.

We make a lot of fuss over many facets of your wedding day. The fine details that you’ve spent months perfecting and aligning with your style. The natural beauty of the bride and bridesmaids. The closest and dearest friends and family all gathered to celebrate your joy. The dashing groom, lavish cake and stunning reception room.

These are all important. But what matters most to us is timing. The moment we chose to press the shutter.

When we press the shutter all other facets of our image are already aligned. In tune with our surroundings, aware of the light available to us and camera always ready for that particular circumstance, we strive for the moment.

That moment.

Grecian departures

Shortly before leaving New Zealand for the sunny and relaxing shores of Greece, Sarah asked us to photograph her gorgeous little girls Kristina and Betty as lasting memories for their grandparents.

In the natural environment of their own home, our absolute favourite place for shooting portraits, we spent an hour or two getting to know the girls and capturing them having a bit of fun.

Who could not be inspired photographing these two little faces? :)
