Amanda & Geoff – NZIPP Iris Awards Wedding Album finalist

Boof! POW! Wham.

At the 2012 NZIPP Iris Awards I was looking to enter something a little different. A little unique. A little more rock ‘n roll than a traditional wedding album.

The idea of a comic book came to me, and using Amanda & Geoff’s Wellington wedding I managed to craft a pop-art, stylised comic book artbook. It received a Bronze medal, and placed me as a finalist in the Wedding Album category!

Hope you enjoy the story of Amanda & Geoff’s wedding, as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Thanks Amanda & Geoff!

Jono & Emma – bespoke invitation design

Jono and Emma were really keen to have a photographic invitation. They had hunted around to find vintage clothing in colours to match their wedding colour scheme of maroon and sky blue. One warm mid-winter day we headed out to the Silverstream Railway Museum to take some engagement photos, which set the scene for their vintage travel inspired wedding. More from the wedding coming soon!

The invitation was a simple card incorporating their colour scheme. It featured a collage of the photos on the front and the wedding details on the back. These details included the web address for the wedding website we also created for them. This allowed them to give more information about the wedding day, the bridal party, show off some more of their photos, and even gave their guests a place to register their attendance.

Rebecca & Mark – Old St Paul’s & The Boatshed

The tiny ray of sunshine that burst through during our bridal photos on the Wellington waterfront wasn’t the best moment of Rebecca & Mark’s wedding day. That would be Rebecca first emerging in her stunning wedding dress. Or the choice of music during their wedding ceremony at Old St Paul’s. Or watching their nerves settle as they read their vows and exchanged rings. Or watching them practise their first dance in the stairwell of The Boatshed. Or listening to embarrassing stories told by the bridal party. Or crazy faces in the Photobooth and just as crazy dance moves on the dancefloor.

The ray of sunshine was beautiful, but Rebecca & Mark’s entire wedding day was full of just as many beautiful moments, the kind of moments we strive to capture and love to share.

Enjoy!

Hannah & Zac – Erskine, Island Bay, Wellington

There’s always something special when there’s a little one involved. A commitment has already been made, the family is underway, and the beautiful marriage ceremony completes the union.

Part indie & part rock. The Foo Fighters mixed with the Juno soundtrack. Balloons and wind-up toys. Suits & ties and Converse shoes. Hannah & Zac’s style infused throughout the day – and a willingness to have a bit of fun!

To Hannah & Zac & Harry.

Amanda & Geoff – bespoke wedding stationery

The main aim of Amanda & Geoff’s day was to have fun and be themselves. Their wedding stationery allowed them to do just that – a whimsical idea designed with scientific precision…

As they are both in science-based jobs we included science undertones in their wedding day stationery. The front of the invitation featured a logo with their initials in the form of elements from a periodic table. As the ceremony was held on Remembrance Ridge high up in the Wellington Botanic Gardens, they wanted to include the garden in some way. So we entwined the logo with green leafed vine, which also featured as decorative pieces on the inside and created a pattern for the back of the RSVP postcard, which was perforated for guests to post back to them.

It was only natural for the seating plan to take the form of a periodic table on the wedding day – every guest’s initials made up an element of the “highly scientific” chart. The guests definitely had to have their thinking caps on to find their place at the Wellesley Boutique Hotel!

Each table had a number with the buffet menu on the back, and each guests place was marked with their periodic element on a card wedged in their fork – a fun way to display a place card.

If you are looking for something different for your invitations or wedding day items – something personalised with your style, story or history, email us! We will happily have a chat and discuss how we can create custom made stationery unique to you and your wedding day.

Josephine & Thomas – Kowhiti, Greytown

There’s a lot of beautiful venues in the Wairarapa, but none may be quite as special as Kowhiti House. For Josephine & Thomas, returning from the UK, it was the perfect spot to spend a few days with close friends and family and celebrate their marriage. For their guests, the perfect spot for a fantastic day and an even more amazing night.

Ladies & Gentlemen, Josephine & Thomas!

The Staglands Wildlife Reserve is officially the most fun you could possibly have for a wedding. The most fun. Ever.

The Wellesley Country Park down the road from Staglands also provided a stunning reception venue, to compliment the rustic outdoors charm of this spring wedding. Lizzy & Luke, this was awesome!

Katrina & Ant

And finally, rounding out our summer season: the rocking vintage wedding of Katrina & Ant, held at the always awesome Erskine Wedding & Events, Island Bay.

A first viewing and photoshoot before the ceremony; beers and canapes outside on the lawn; Shaun Preston pounding away on the piano as late night entertainment – this was as relaxed and non-traditional as you could get. And, this is the first, and possibly only, time I get to accompany a wedding blog with Guns ‘n Roses. That’s how cool these guys are!

(This wedding was also recently featured over at Polka Dot Bride – don’t forget to head over there for your very own wedding inspiration.)

Katrina & Ant – thank you!

NZIPP Iris Awards – success!

As a big advocate of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography, and of course a recently qualified member, it was important to my personal growth and development that I entered a few prints in the recent Iris Awards.

Well, imagine my excitement when I sat through 6+ hours of print judging during the awards to see my prints receive awards. And not just any awards, but a Silver and a couple of Bronzes.

Of course, it didn’t really sink in until hours later after been congratulated by plenty of other photographers. Apparently Silver is quite a big deal. Who knew? :)

The full gallery of winning images can be found here, with the Wedding category (where all 4 of my images were entered) here.

What was really important to me when selecting and processing images for the awards was that the image were true to me. Past winners of these awards have often been criticised for being overly photoshopped, and whilst I’m sure some tone mapping and heavy use of textures could have added some emphasis and drama to my images, I wanted to enter these awards with my photos being processed the same way that me – and our clients – like seeing them. Other than some sepia toning (which, I’ll be honest, isn’t entirely normal for us) these are almost as I delivered them.

The following were the medal winners. 3 out of 4 prints isn’t a bad ratio – next year, I’m going for the album category. Aiming high. :)

Silver (Kahiwa & Grant):

NZIPP Iris Awards Silver medal

Bronze (Matt & Kel):

NZIPP Iris Awards Bronze medal

Bronze (Leigh & Giles):

NZIPP Iris Awards Bronze medal

A big thank you must go out to Jenny & Larissa at FineLine Photography for their assistance in helping me choose suitable images, advice on processing & cropping my images, and finally working with me for the final printing & matting. I couldn’t have entered – let alone won these awards – without their help. Thank you!

Featured Love

We learnt a lot over the last weekend at the NZIPP Infocus conference. We even managed to pick up a few print awards in the Wedding category (but that’s the subject of another post).

But one of the things highlighted to us was that Kiwis are terrible at SSP – “Shameless Self Promotion”. We’re far too modest to jump around proclaiming how good we are, so this blog post is going to break that mould, just for once!

We’ve been getting a few features on wedding blogs recently, so I thought I would share them with you all.

The Australian bridal blog Polka Dot Bride featured Katrina & Ant’s Erskine wedding yesterday:

Polka Dot Bride

The amazing and always beautiful Wedding Chicks blog featured Leigh & Giles’ Wairarapa wedding at Tarureka Estate:
The Wedding Chicks

And New Zealand’s very own Wedding Wise featured Nat & Brett’s Wellington wedding:

Enjoy!

Kahiwa & Grant

I started by taking off my shoes. Of course, that’s the polite thing to do in anyone’s house – right?

Our conversation deviated from wedding photography through to website design, SEO and social media… What? Not all photographers discuss SEO techniques with their prospective clients?

I brought up the fact that Aneta and myself were married at Erskine – it only seemed fitting to mention it.

I was sitting in Kahiwa’s apartment discussing the prospect of photographing her upcoming wedding to Grant. All of the above seemed fairly respectable and on-topic at the time – the conversation just wandered as we got to know each other a little bit more. Little did I know that a few weeks later we would receive an email from Kahiwa confirming her choice of photographers and the following posting appeared on her blog:

But here was someone I felt comfortable talking to, almost straight away. I *love* that it’s a husband and wife team, and that they got married at Erskine too. I like that they’re trying for something a little bit different. I like that he took his shoes off when he came inside. I like that I found them through a friend (Jake). I like that I got to talk to him about their website and marketing strategies (I’m such a nerd).”

Well, what do you know? :)

It was just meant to be. And I’m glad I’m polite enough to take off my shoes, that I too am an internet nerd and that we love Erskine so much, because I got the chance to photograph the beautiful occasion that was Kahiwa & Grant’s wedding. It. Was. Awesome.

Boys & Girls – I present to you: Team Grahiwa.

Kahiwa & Grant – thank you.

Kahiwa & Grant – a prelude

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about technical (im)perfection.

Much of our craft has been dedicated to not allowing technical deficiencies to get in the way of delivering a good image. We own the best pro-level cameras for this line of work (Nikon FX digital SLRs if you’re interested!) We carry an array of fast prime lenses that focus quickly and allow us to shoot in very low light (we love our f/1.4 Nikon primes). We carry backups of everything. The only thing getting in our way should be our creativity.

But sometimes it doesn’t help. Getting a technically perfect image isn’t easy. Sometimes, throughout the frantic pace of a wedding day, you miss a shot. Your judgement of the light is off. Your exposure is off. Your focus is off.

This is one of those images. A mistake. In the dark bridal preparation room my camera hunted for the focus. I snapped it anyway. Ordinarily I wouldn’t dream of delivering an image like this to a client, let alone blogging it for the world to see. But I love it. The shadows and subtlety almost say more than the fully-focused image would have.

Erskine Wellington Wedding

More to come.

Lizzie & Matt

Hey, Lizzie and I got engaged. Hurrah hurrah.” Matt’s email arrived in our Inbox.

Lizzie & Matt were after a chilled out afternoon tea & cocktail affair, they told us before the wedding.

The beautiful Gear Homestead was Lizzie & Matt’s chosen venue, and on a calm mid-autumn Wellington day I’m not sure there’s a more suitable and pleasant venue in the Wellington region. Perched on the hill, overlooking the harbour, that beautiful autumn sunshine slicing through the trees, their friends and family gathered for that perfectly relaxed afternoon.

They brought many personal touches into the day: Lizzie’s gorgeous birdcage veil complimenting her 50’s dress, pink & red flourishes delicately scattered throughout the day, a great selection of canapes and drinks, plenty of sweet treats (M&Ms, anyone?), and of course Lizzie made her very own cupcakes.

Oh, and of course – there was a wedding too! After all, isn’t that what this is all about? :P

I think the following track is simply the perfect accompaniment to these images. Enjoy!

The Photobooth in action!

Here’s a little promo video we recently put together of the Photobooth in action.

It seems a lot of people didn’t know what our Photobooth looked like – the fact it’s stylish and black, and blends in nicely to almost any venue.

They didn’t realise it’s a stand-up Photobooth – no seating limitations, look how many people you can squeeze in there!

They didn’t realise there’s a monitor to check your hair or perfect your pose – you know exactly how the photo is going to turn out.

And they didn’t know what our 6×4″ printed photosheets actually look like – what’s the point in a skinny little strip when we can print nice big photos? It’s not the 1960’s anymore!

So here’s a quick promo video we recently made – 1 min 45 secs of Photobooth awesomeness. Thanks to Daniel & Elena for letting us use their wedding!

Music track is “Daisy” by the awesome Fang Island. Check them out. Seriously. This was our soundtrack to the summer. There’s a high chance when driving to your wedding this summer we pumped ourselves up with a little bit of Fang Island, so if you want to know what makes WE DO tick, have a listen! (Plus their record label Sargent House was awesome enough to give me permission to use this track for my video. How cool is that? Buy their album. We did.)

Have a watch. Have a laugh. Book the Photobooth for your next event! :)

Katrina & Blair

Remember Katrina & Blair? That was a quick preview from their engagement session – now buckle yourselves in and prepare for the full force of their wedding!

We work with a lot of couples – clearly that’s what weddings are all about, right? However, I don’t think we’ve come across a couple that seem so perfectly suited to each other than Katrina & Blair. And they worked in such close harmony in the build up to preparing their big day together.

All the details were perfect, and everything was planned down to perfection. They each brought so many aspects of their own style, and more importantly, their own personality to their wedding day. It was a fantastic gathering of some really close family and friends, and you can experience the day in full detail below. Enjoy!

Crystal Clear Productions were also present on the big day, and it’s amazing how few of my photos they appear in. They did an extremely good job of covering the wedding in a non-obtrusive manner, much like our approach. Well, apart from the odd interview, like below, of course!

Meanwhile Blair, his groomsmen and father put the finishing touches on the Audi wedding cars.

One of my new favourite Wellington venues – The Lodge @ Shelly Bay – looked magnificent. Not only is the isolated setting on the Shelly Bay coast a brilliant spot for the late evening sunshine, but the interior of the venue is elegantly renovated and beautiful. Add Blair’s lighting handiwork to the exterior of the venue and the place is truly stunning.
